A San Francisco staple. If you come here during the weekend, an evening, and/or a sunny day, be prepared to wait in line and struggle a bit to find a place to sit. That being said, it's so worth it! Have yet to be disappointed by Hook Fish. This place operates like a well oiled machine. Oysters ($4 per): FRESH and tasty! Their red wine mignonette is a welcome addition. Fish Sandwich ($16): YUM! Fish is fresh and each ingredient adds to a perfectly balanced sandwich. Must try. Fish and Chips ($18): LOVE! simple dish that will exceed your expectations. Fish is well cooked, battered evenly, with a crunch, and topped with a sprinkle of flakey salt that just brings it all together. Chips (fries) are epically seasoned. Wish all fries were like this.
If it's a sunny day in the sunset, you can almost guarantee that there'll be a line out the door at HooK Fish. They have an outdoor patio and serve up a variety of poke and handheld seafood options with beer and wine, what better way to soak up the sun? Because of these constant crowds, it took a few attempts to actually stop in for a bite, and even when the line didn't seem so long around 2pm, it was still a good 30 minute wait. Hopes were high here, if it's this popular, it has to be good? And it was good, but not quite as good as I hoped/expected. Ordered the grilled fish burrito and poke plate for two of us to share. Poke was good and full of flavor, but everything other than the poke lacked in the flavor department. The burrito and the rice and beans on the plate were a little bland and needed something more. Was searching for more of a pickled flavor in the burrito and some salt in the beans and rice. They had a bunch of different sauces and salsas, we took one of each, which did help liven up the dishes. Food is super fresh, you can even buy fresh fish to take home and cook yourself.
One of my favorite spots to bring people visiting from out of town. After a bike ride through golden gate park and a walk along ocean beach this is the perfect spot to refuel. We went on a weekday around lunch and it wasn't too busy but I've been here on a nice day in the city and have had to wait for 30+ minutes. The oysters are fresh and I love the fish of the day sandwich and the burrito. Everything is flavorful and fresh. You must try the habanero carrot hot sauce. It has the perfect amount of spice.
